I am an artist, freelance designer/illustrator, musician and art teacher from Ullapool, in the Scottish Highlands. I studied Visual Communication, specialising in Illustration, at the Glasgow School of Art receiving a BA (Hons) degree. I gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Education for Secondary Art Teaching in 2014 from the University of Glasgow and since then I have taught at both Secondary and Primary level Art and Design. I like working with texture, colour and line, often creating abstract imagery. I have an affinity with the Scottish landscape, especially the Highlands, and try to depict this is my art work. I regularly teach art within the community in the form of evening classes, one off workshops and one to one lessons. My art work can be seen on CD covers and sleeve designs, including my own album 'Leaves that Fly, 'I Won't be Found' by Galileo's Fan and ‘Notes from the Boat’ and ‘The Four Pillars’ albums, both by Mike Vass.
I was brought up listening to many different styles of music, including traditional music and some of my earliest memories are of music sessions going on in my house and I have been writing songs for as long as she can remember. I became involved in the Feisean movement from aged eight and was a participant of Feis Rois from then until I left school. After which, I became a regular tutor at their residential weeks for Junior and Senior participants and at the Adult Feis weekend, tutoring whistles, keyboard, ukulele and song writing. I successfully auditioned for the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music and spent my 6th school year there receiving specialist tuition from some of the world’s leading Scottish traditional musicians. Whilst at art school in Glasgow, I was a member of Glasgow’s Hidden Lane Choir and performed regularly with them. I also performed regularly independently and as part of a duo. A job opportunity brought me back to my Highland home. I run weekly music sessions with my old pal, Mairearad Green, and regularly play gigs and Ceilidhs with a variety of other musicians, including The Highland Ceilidh Band. I am a singing, whistle and group music tutor for the Youth Music Initiative across Highland Schools. |
